About Today’s Message, by Jesse Walters
Many of us are transplants to South Florida. We came here from somewhere else.  For most of us, the weather was a big allure, but a job relocation, or a need to be near family, could have played a part as well.  But fantasy soon gives way to reality, especially if we find we don’t know anyone, or feel marooned or estranged from our past life.  Today, we will explore some thoughts, gleaned in part from a lifetime of actively seeking out new community each time we relocated, as well as some helpful strategies from the book “This is Where I Belong” by Melody Warnick.  How do we learn to love where we live?

Family Fun Friday: Christmas in July!
Friday, July 12th, 6-8 pm, Ministers Hall
Ho, ho, hot! Let's cool off by celebrating with the tastes, smells, sounds, and fun of the Christmas season in the middle of summer. Kids, parents, and kids-at-heart (meaning ALL congregants!) are invited to dress up in their brightest holiday outfits and come together for a festive dinner potluck, cookie decorating, gift wrapping, caroling, and holiday activities.
Please bring your favorite holiday food for the dinner potluck (a roast turkey will be provided) and a new child's toy, game, or gift card (unwrapped) that we will be wrapping to donate to a local charity (more details to come).
This is an ideal opportunity to get to know the kids and parents within our Congregation as well as invite along some of your own family, friends or neighbors to introduce them to our idea of community. Hope to see you there!

THE POWER OF “WE”

Call to Worship: From “In This Delicate Turning," the message last Sunday by Rev. Marta Valentín as part of Sunday morning worship at General Assembly.

It is time to throw out our exceptional identity and humble ourselves... We have always done good in the world—it is in our DNA. The question is, are we ready to do better for our own people? Because the world includes every person in our faith—many of whom have been micro-aggressioned right out the door. It is the silent revolving door that many do not want to acknowledge. It is time to look ourselves not just in our faces, but in our souls and ask ourselves, who are we, really? Which Unitarian Universalism are we taking into our future? If we have no intention of taking it to the promised land, then let’s just acknowledge that. Let’s Marie Kondo our unfaithful practices and release what no longer serves us and make room for what will. How can we save the world if we can’t save ourselves? Remember, I say this because love you and I need you to survive.


But I also need to say this, and I speak only for myself: I am running out of truths to tell and ways of saying them. It is time now to keep this beloved faith from fracturing, moreover, in this delicate turning let us remember that before anything, ante todos, somos sere humanos, we are human beings who have chosen to travel together, to make a new, more just world together. We must continue to choose each other as companions if we are to accompany one another.

*** Alice Ryan: We recently learned that former member Alice Ryan passed away peacefully in hospice on the morning of May 30th. She did not want services and was cremated, her ashes taken to her home area in Alabama. Alice's daughter said if anyone wants to contact her to give a memorial gift to please call. UU MATTERS: With the arrival of summer, our summer calendar is not quite as busy, so we're going to publish UU Matters every other week instead of every week. The newsletter will go out on these dates – June 24, July 8 & 22, and Aug. 5 & 19. If you have an item for UU Matters, please plan accordingly and email it to admin@1stuupb.org by the Thursday BEFORE publication. Thanks for understanding.
