IMPONDERABLES: EVIL
Worship Assistant:  Andrew Kahn

Prelude For What It’s Worth (S. Stills)

Welcome

Call to Worship: Does God Allow Evil and Suffering?  by Maryann Spikes

Does God allow evil and suffering?

Yes.
Can you look me level in the eyes
and tell me what some people do
to hurt little kids is not evil?

No.
Evil is real, but how can someone
who doesn’t exist allow anything?

Yes.
If evil is real, then good is real.
But if good is real, what being
do you know who is always good?
But here we are again.

Would a good God allow
evil and suffering?

No.
We must be mistaken.
Morality must be relative.

No real evil, no real mark to miss.
Sorry, kids.
Yeah. Right.
But why doesn’t he STOP it?!
Does he just kick back,
do nothing while we suffer?

What kind of almighty God
doesn’t have the POWER
to stop our pain?
But imagine feeling nothing.
And imagine you have no choice
because evil is impossible.

Love and all that is beautiful
and worth dying for would be impossible.
Maybe it is more powerful, more loving,
to empower us to choose love?

Maybe.

Lighting the Chalice Flame:
Come, Come, Whoever You Are
Come, come, whoever you are,
Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving.
Ours is no caravan of despair.
Come, yet again come.

Affirmation: Love is the spirit of this Congregation and service is its law. This is our great covenant to dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love and to help one another.

Help Spread The Word!!
As we continue to use social media as way to get the word out about who we are and what we’re all about at 1stUUPB, you can help us a lot in just a few clicks (if you have a Facebook account, that is).
*Find our Facebook page by searching for us by name, and make sure you have “Liked” the page.
*Whenever you see a post from us in your newsfeed, don’t just scroll past it. Please click on it and select a “Like” option. If you hover over the Like button with your cursor and wait a moment without clicking, a few other options show up. You can choose a thumbs up, a heart, a laugh, a “what in the world?!?” face, a sad face or a mad face. Make a comment on the post.
*Share the post either on your own page or share it with someone you think might be interested in it.
*Give us a 5 star rating and tell what you enjoy about our congregation.
*If you have the Facebook app on your smart phone, anytime you are at 1stUUPB for a Sunday service or NewsTalk or Teaching Thursday or yoga or a movie or a meeting or whatever, please check in to let people know you are here.
Why are we asking you to do all this? Because it is an easy way to spread the word about who we are and the important work we do here. Plus, all this is FREE marketing! Who doesn’t like free?!?
