Prelude: I Bought Me A Cat (Traditional)

Welcome

Call to Worship

Lighting the Chalice Flame:
Come, come, whoever you are,
Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving.
Ours is no caravan of despair.
Come, yet again come.

AffirmationLove is the spirit of this Congregation and service is its law. This is our great covenant to dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love and to help one another.

Hymn: #203 All Creatures of the Earth and Sky

Blessing of the Animals:

Leader: Surrounded by the animals we love, we remember with gratitude the pets, protectors, and animal companions who have blessed our lives.

All: We give thanks for our childhood pets, who taught us to love and to cry. We give thanks for our children's pets, who help us to teach them responsibility and relationship, and we give thanks for the pets of adulthood who brighten our days and comfort our nights.

Leader: Surrounded by beloved pets, we remember that many animals suffer.

All: We remember that some animals are hunted or deserted or tortured or hungry. We remember that nature can be cruel and that people can be mean. We remember and want to help.

Leader: Surrounded by the animals we love, we know that many animals contribute to our lives.

All: We give thanks for all those animals who help us: Worker animals who guard us and find our lost and guide the blind. The animals who provide us food and clothing, who tote our burdens and entertain us with their antics. And for animals who give their lives to help us learn.

Leader: Spirit of life, help us to remember that we live and work and play among the animals. This world is theirs too. Help us to be their friends, to love them and care for them and protect them from harm, to thank them when we use their lives for ours. Especially this morning, bless these animals who are the companions of our lives. Hear our outpouring of love and of gratitude for them and help us translate that into love and gratitude for all your creatures.

All: We bless these animals we love. We pledge to care for them tenderly and faithfully, and to remember that we are not alone on the earth.

Moment of Silence & Candle Lighting

Religious Education ClassGo now in peace, go now in peace; may the spirit of love surround you everywhere, everywhere you may go.

Offertory: Memory (A. L. Webber & T. Nunn)

Sermon:  Imponderables: Metaphysics, Rev. Dr. Dan Lambert

Hymn: Joy to the World (H. Axton)

Jeremiah was a bullfrog;
Was a good friend of mine.
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him a-drink his wine.
And he always had some mighty fine wine.

(chorus)

Singin' joy to the world,

All the boys and girls now,
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea,
Joy to you and me.
And if I were the king of the world,
Tell you what I'd do.
I'd throw away the cars and the bars
and the war,
Make sweet love to you.

(chorus)

You know I love the ladies;

Love to have my fun.
I'm a high life flyer and a rainbow rider;
A straight shootin' son-of-a-gun.
I said a straight shootin' son-of-a-gun.

(chorus)

Joy to the world,

All the boys and girls.
Joy to the world,
Joy to you and me.

Joy to the world,

All the boys and girls.
Joy to the fishes in the deep blue sea.
Joy to you and me.

Prelude: How Can I Keep From Singing (R. Wadsworth Lowry)

Welcome

Call to Worship: A Prayer for the World, by the Rev Amy Petrie Shaw

For all who die in war
   We lift up our hearts
For all who live in suffering in the aftermath of violence
   We lift up our hearts
For all who give their lives in smoke and flame
   We lift up our hearts
For all who go on in honor of the dead
   We lift up our hearts
For all who have served
   We lift up our hearts
For our country and our world
   We lift up our hearts
For a planet that will find peace
   We lift up our hearts
For the young and the innocent
   We lift up our hearts
For the weary and war torn
   We lift up our hearts
For those who would pray
   We lift up our hearts
For those too angry to cry
   We lift up our hearts
For all of us, for the many names of God
   We lift up our hearts
We lift up our hearts
Shanti, shalom, peace, salaam.

IMPONDERABLES: EVIL
Worship Assistant:  Andrew Kahn

Prelude For What It’s Worth (S. Stills)

Welcome

Call to Worship: Does God Allow Evil and Suffering?  by Maryann Spikes

Does God allow evil and suffering?

Yes.
Can you look me level in the eyes
and tell me what some people do
to hurt little kids is not evil?

No.
Evil is real, but how can someone
who doesn’t exist allow anything?

Yes.
If evil is real, then good is real.
But if good is real, what being
do you know who is always good?
But here we are again.

Would a good God allow
evil and suffering?

No.
We must be mistaken.
Morality must be relative.

No real evil, no real mark to miss.
Sorry, kids.
Yeah. Right.
But why doesn’t he STOP it?!
Does he just kick back,
do nothing while we suffer?

What kind of almighty God
doesn’t have the POWER
to stop our pain?
But imagine feeling nothing.
And imagine you have no choice
because evil is impossible.

Love and all that is beautiful
and worth dying for would be impossible.
Maybe it is more powerful, more loving,
to empower us to choose love?

Maybe.

Lighting the Chalice Flame:
Come, Come, Whoever You Are
Come, come, whoever you are,
Wanderer, worshiper, lover of leaving.
Ours is no caravan of despair.
Come, yet again come.

Affirmation: Love is the spirit of this Congregation and service is its law. This is our great covenant to dwell together in peace, to seek the truth in love and to help one another.

Prelude: Bless The Broken Road (M. Hummon, B. Boyd & J. Hanna)

Welcome

Call to Worship: Crystal of Creation, by the Rev. Tess Baumberger
If there is a heaven, it is right here, right now,
in this particular arrangement of nature,
this happening of earth, moon, and star,
this constellation of instants,
this laden moment,
this flash of recognition,
this particle of time.
If there is a god, it is all around us, everywhere,
in every blinking eye,
in every pulsing possibility,
in every ugliness, every beauty,
in every wholeness, every part.
If there is an axiom in the universe
it is life,
it is love,
it is death,
it is hatred,
it is wanting and needing to be
in this crystal of creation.

Lighting the Chalice Flame:

Come, Come, Whoever You Are
Come, come, whoever you are,

Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures.
Words and deeds of prophetic people which challenge us to confront evil.
Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life.
Jewish and Christian teachings.
Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science.
Spiritual teachings of Earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
